The county was first found by Native American tribes, until 1769 when Spanish explorers were given land grants. After years of several failed attempts by the California legislature to form what we know now as Orange County, the county was officially incorporated on August 1, 1889. Orange County was named after the citrus fruit in an attempt to promote immigration, calling it “a place where anything could grow.”
