History

The very first inhabitants of Lake Elsinore were the Luiseno Indians, and they called the lake Entengvo Wumoma, which translates to Hot Springs by the Little Sea. Under the Spaniard ruling, it was called Laguna Grande, and then when it became a part of Mexico, it was called Rancho La Laguna. In 1883 the Machado Rancho, now known as Lake Elsinore, was sold to the founder of the city Franklin Heald for about $24,000. Among the city founders was Margaret, who picked the name Elsinore because she liked the sound of the word. The name was taken from a Shakespeare’s work. The city was incorporated in 1888. It was first part of San Diego, but later became part of Riverside County. Lake Elsinore also was the first to elect an African-American mayor in 1964.
